Govt likely to up LPG price

The National Energy Policy Office (NEPO) and the Ministry of Energy on Friday will consider increasing the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price for industrial and transport sectors, Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul said on Monday.
Mr Wannarat said the LPG price will certainly be raised but it would not reach six baht a kilogram, as resolved by the previous government.
He said the government will peg the LPG price for the household sector to alleviate the financial burdens of public members.
The minister believed lifting the LPG price for the transport segment would not urge local transport businesses to use LPG from the household sector, since its prices would not differ much, adding that the cost of importing this fuel has greatly dropped from about 900 US dollars per tonne to 380 US dollars per tonne and the monthly import has fallen to 40,000 tonnes from 60,000 tonnes.
As for the government's free electricity usage scheme, the energy minister expected that each household would not have to pay its electricity bills if the usage is below 100 units a month.
He said the budget for this scheme should be approximately eight billion baht.
